The economy added 113,000 jobs in January—far below what is needed for recovery—and the nation’s unemployment rate was nearly unchanged at 6.6%, compared with December’s 6.7%, according to figures released this morning by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of long-term unemployed people (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) declined by 232,000 in January, but there were still 3.6 million long-term jobless workers. Read more >>>

It’s halftime at the Indiana General Assembly. This week all bills moving forward in the legislative process had to have passed out of the chamber where they originated. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka released this statement after a procedural vote on extending emergency unemployment insurance benefits failed in the Senate: Today the Senate once again failed to approve an extension of emergency unemployment insurance, 40 days after the benefit was allowed to lapse. The bill fell short by one Republican vote. Just one vote prevented 1.7 million Americans from receiving a desperately needed lifeline. Read more >>>

Congress is currently debating the Trans Pacific Partnership Treaty – a massive trade agreement between the United States and 11 Pacific Rim nations that like NAFTA, CAFTA and others trade deals before will have a devastating effect on American workers.

Now, Congress is considering giving "Fast Track Authority" to this trade deal – meaning that members of Congress would not be allowed to amend or change the bill in anyway and would simply vote “yes” or “no” on the treaty as it stands today.
